The selection at the Jungle is amazing, however I would like to see the check out staff more attentive. Today I was in and some young staff members were much more focused on their dates after work and when they were getting a break than with my order or me as a customer. I even had to ask 3 staff members to let me through because they were so busy in a personal conversation and they were blocking the aisle.

Yes, most of us do know the difference between a job and a career. I think the point that Dawn was making was that some of the baggers & cashiers (usually those of school age) tend to pay more attention to what they will do AFTER work than what they are doing while AT work. Unfortunately, if they don't pay attention to what they are doing AT work, they won't have the money to do what they want to do AFTER work. They might not even have to worry about even showing up to work.
Socializing at work is normal especially when a teenager, but they need to learn that work is just that....WORK. Maybe they will also learn that bagging and cashiering is hard work and that they might want to do something else for a career instead of as just an afterschool job for some extra spending money. However, I have had some JJ's cashiering and bagging staff be extremely polite and helpful. Even though they might "have to do it" for "not much more than minimum wage", they are professional enough to be courteous to the customer. They are adults who have an idea of what customer service means. Just because the job is a minimum wage paying position doesn't give them the excuse to goof-off either. I'm sure JJ's has the same policy as most employment sites, that if you do your job well and put some effort into it, you'll get pay increases. Plus the fact that JJ's isn't going to give $10/hour to a high schooler who's going to have to leave when school starts in the fall or needs time off for their various activities. They get flexability in their schedule for these things. Not all jobs (or careers even) offer that. There is no reason that a customer should NOT expect to be treated nicely and professionally just because an employee is getting paid "not much more than minimum wage". The employees are getting paid to do a JOB and that is customer service. Whether it's stocking, bagging, cashiering or managing it's all called customer service. Not blocking the aisle while chatting with some co-workers. It might be a boring job, but it pays you. If you don't like it, quit and find another. I know that some fast food places are offering over $8/hour. I know that not all the younger employees at JJ's is like this and HerAuntie's niece is probably one of those who works very hard at her job, but I can't accept the reasoning that just because a job is boring and/or might not pay you what YOU think it's worth gives enough reason to slack off while at work. Not trying to be nasty or mean, just giving an opinion to a very personal topic. I'm getting off my soapbox now. Thank you. |

i agree the job may be boring Auntie, and there is a differEnce between a job and a career, BUT it IS still a JOB, not chattime/playtime... even younger people need to respect the fact that they signed on the dotted line for the wage offered and are expected to do what the job they were hired for entails.that's why they call it going to "WORK".i also DO acknowledge that some people expect too much and are too demanding of employees who work for such a low wage, and give them little respect, but when they are standing around chatting it would be nice if they didn't stand in a clump in the way of the customers, as i have seen and experienced at many places, but i have also experienced many polite and helpful employees as well, so i need to give them credit where credit is due. Auntie, I wish your neice all good things in life and a good education so that she will have a career instead of a minimum wage job in the future.

Well, perhaps some of the teenagers that work there as baggers and cashiers could care less about your buying two ply toilet paper. I have to say it's one of the most boring jobs in the world. I have a neice that works there and for not much more than minimun wage. You're not going to be treated like royalty, face it this job is held by people that have to do it rather than people who have chosen it as a career. Certainly you know the differance between a job and a career.

I have noticed this too- we have been there a couple times and both times it was the samething you said- too busy talking about "personal" business than taking care of the customer. Yeah that could use some work.
